Zebra blinds (also called dual-layer, vision, or banded shades) are a roller blind built with alternating sheer and opaque fabric bands on a single roller tube. Rotating the tube shifts the layers — when the opaque bands align you get privacy and shade, when the sheer bands align you keep the view and let light through. Two functions in one blind, controlled with a single chain or motor.
Roller blinds give you on-or-off light control: fully open or fully closed. Zebra blinds give you everything in between — open the bands for view, close them for privacy, or any position between. Choose zebra for daytime flexibility and a modern look. Choose roller for maximum blackout, simpler operation, or moisture-prone rooms like kitchens and bathrooms.
No. Standard zebra blinds reduce light significantly when the opaque bands align, but small gaps along the edges and between fabric layers let some light through. Blackout zebra fabrics exist and dramatically cut light, but they don't deliver true 100% darkness. For a fully dark bedroom, pair zebra blinds with blackout drapery or choose a true blackout roller blind instead.
Yes and No — when interior lights are on at night and the sheer bands are aligned, silhouettes are visible from outside. To prevent this, rotate the layers so the opaque bands cover the window. For full nighttime privacy in bedrooms or street-facing rooms, pair zebra blinds with a secondary blackout layer.
They're good for daytime light control and view, but not ideal for full bedroom darkness. If you sleep light or have early sun exposure, a blackout roller blind, honeycomb shade, or layered drapery setup will serve you better. Many Edmonton homeowners use zebra blinds in living rooms, dining rooms, and offices, then choose blackout for primary bedrooms.
Zebra blinds typically cost more than roller blinds because of the extra fabric and more complex construction. Thermotek's factory-direct pricing keeps both lines well below retail showroom rates — typically 30-40% less. Edmonton homeowners can get a free in-home measure with next written quote on either product.
Yes — Thermotek offers motorized zebra blinds with the same smart-home integration as our roller line: Google Home, Amazon Alexa, and Apple HomeKit. Motorization is especially useful for zebra blinds since precise band alignment is easier with a motor than a manual chain.
Vacuum gently with a soft brush attachment to remove dust from both fabric layers. Avoid water on the bands — moisture can warp the band edges or stain the sheer panels. For deeper cleaning, lower the blind fully and dust each band with a microfiber cloth. Don't machine-wash, soak, or apply harsh cleaners.
Yes. All Thermotek zebra blinds are available cordless or with motorization, meeting Health Canada's Corded Window Coverings Regulations (SOR/2019-97). No accessible cord loops, no strangulation hazard. Cordless and motorized lift options are standard across our zebra blind range.
